Calendar year 2021
Calendar year 2021 started with the pattern of notification displayed in the last week of 2020: A relatively small number of old cases compared to the number of new cases reported each week, which were still assigned to dates throughout the entire pandemic period. The distinctive characteristic this calendar year is the removal of old cases across the entire pandemic period, which often came down to displacing them to other dates. Nevertheless, notification of old cases prevailed in some periods (e.g., weeks 16 to 18 and weeks 26 to 28). It is also remarkable that large numbers of old cases dated July 2021 (weeks 27 to 30) were reported between weeks 35 and 42.

This is the second week into the fifth wave of covid cases. The number of new cases reported by CM during week 27 more than doubles the number of cases reported in week 26, but old cases numbering 724 continue to be reported that are dated throughout the pandemic period.
Week 26 of 2021
This week immediately follows the Majorcan macro outbreak in the Balearic Islands that quickly spread throughout Spain. Compared to week 25, in which CM reported 2871 new cases, the number of new cases reported during week 26 is 4478 (about 56% more cases). At the same time, and in contrast to the 132 old cases reported in week 25, week 26 reports 1110 old cases (a figure 8.4 times larger) dated mostly between November 2020 and May 2021.

This is the last of the prototypical weeks so far in 2021. Now the number of new cases (2871) greatly exceeds the number of old cases added during the week (132) or the total number of old cases altered during the week.
